Who are the lecturers at SDC?
Mr. Fourie selects each Academic staff member according to the following criteria:
  • They are qualified at least one level above the level that they teach
  • They have industry experience, many of which are still involved in the industry with part-time businesses or associations
  • New teaching talent is preferred as SDC strives to keep the courses fresh and cutting edge
  • Staff who are passionate and enthusiastic about teaching
  • What teaching methods are used?
    Incorporating European teaching techniques has ensured that SDC practises one-on-one training and skill development. 
    How big are classes?
    Classes are between 24 – 26 students which allow lecturers the ability to teach one-on-one and give students the freedom to move at a pace that encourages their creativity.
    How often do I have to attend lectures?
    Most courses require that you attend 8 lectures a week. Most course timetables give each student one day off a week.
    How long is each lecture?
    Each lecture lasts about 2 hours.
    Can I attend lectures any time?
    There is a structured timetable to ensure that the Campus is never crowded. Students have to attend lectures according to their timetable. SDC strives to plan a maximum of 2 lecture sessions a day (total 4 hours) for students so that they are never exhausted at the end of the day and have plenty of time for assignments or part-time jobs.
    What time does Campus open and close?
    There are 4 lecture sessions a day.

  • 8:30 – 10:30
  • 10:30 – 12:30
  • 12:30 – 14:30
  • 14:30 – 16:30

    Some campuses offer short courses or extra time for students on week nights and weekends.
  • Is there transport to the Campus?
    Every campus has public transport that is easily accessible. Student lift clubs are also arranged among students.
    Is there Accommodation available?
    Student accommodation is arranged by the admissions office. A variety of options are available to suit all budgets from shared apartments to granny flats and houses. Rental costs range from R1000.00 per month.
    Are meals provided by the College?
    Each Campus has a Canteen that sells a huge selection of beverages, snacks, meals and sweets. A few Vegetarian and Halaall items are provided as well.
    Do I need to buy my own textbooks?
    SDC has sourced cutting edge information and created comprehensive syllabi that have reduced the need for expensive text books. The College will recommend one or two books that may assist the student in their studies and careers, but this is not compulsory.
    Do I have to buy stationery?
    SDC has sourced affordable stationery required for your course and will provide you with a list of the items on application. Your stationery will arrive in a pack and complimentary Portfolio Bag in your first week of College.
    Do I need to buy my own materials?
    All materials needed for your course are for your own account. These items include fabrics, modelling materials, drawing and painting paper and canvasses etc.
    Do I need to buy my own sewing machines, laptop or software?
    All the machinery, computers and software is provided but most students prefer to have these facilities available at home as well so that they can easily complete assignments after hours. SDC can arrange student discounts on all purchases.
    Will I be able to enter any competitions?
    Competitions are so important at SDC that they are even incorporated in the syllabus. Design competitions are a quick and relatively easy way to get huge exposure and have helped kick start many a student’s career.

    SDC subscribes students to both local and International design competitions.
    Does industry know of Style Design College?
    Nearly all the SDC Advisory board members are key figures in industry. Apart from the many shows and exhibitions held each year for the public and industry SDC also nurtures a close relationship with industry by inviting weekly guest speakers to the College.
    Can I still work part-time?
    Many students have part-time jobs in the design field and manage to balance their studies with their growing careers. It does require some time management skills but this is one of the many skills taught at SDC.
    What sort of social life is there at SDC?
    The SRC plan an entire calendar of social events which include teambuilding getaways, themed dress up days, clubbing, picnics, beach parties and so much more to ensure you make friends and maybe meet someone special.
    How does SDC have such a high graduate employment rate?
    Apart from the College’s reputation in industry a multitude of shows, exhibitions and events are hosted each year that maximise student exposure. In the 3rd year of each course, a 3 month internship is arranged for each student. Many of these placements result in continued employment for the student.
    How do I know what course or field to enrol in?
    The admissions manager will interview you and give you a tour of the Campus. She will assess your interests and natural talents and advice you on the best route to take.
    How soon should I apply?
    Enrolments are open year round and years in advance. Provisional acceptance is offered to students of Grade 10 and 11 based on their current grades and on the provision that they pass the admission requirements after graduating from grade 12. We advise you apply as soon as possible as the College’s low class numbers sometimes cause late applications to go onto the waiting list.
